ღ - Thanks to [personal profile] trickytricky's recommendation, I've been listening to the Blueprint for Armageddon podcast, which is about the lead-up to World War I, as well as all the other political and historical context that led up to it. It's definitely a bit on the rambly side, the host has some inflections that took me awhile to get used to, but as promised it's utterly engaging and really interesting to look at, in the context of how Star Wars is a reflection of reality in some ways, in the sense of all these complicated moving pieces contributing to a bigger whole.

It's interesting for it's own sake, rather than for giving context to SW, I would say, but I would recommend it so far, even though I'm only an hour into the first one. Even if history isn't usually your thing, the host is compelling enough that it's still really cool to listen to.

ღ - I feel like I either go 1mph or 100mph when it comes to Star Wars lately (to be fair, I set up this journal and my tumblr specifically to be Star Wars-only, with some minor personal stuff sneaking in occasionally) and a lot of that comes down to whether or not the thing I'm reading is something that really speaks to me. I've been a little anxiety-ridden lately, so upcoming canon is stressing me out, so I'm embracing something more of a "Fuck it, then I'm just going to read the things I want to read and try to have fun for five minutes!" attitude, which worked out pretty well when I reread Shipyards of Doom and had all the Obi-Wan feelings again.

Anyway, my point is, HERE HAVE SOME ARCHIVE META AGAIN. (Tagged as #canon because some points are ones that are relevant to canon that I'll want to revisit, even though the comics themselves are very much Legends and anything they add is not canon.)

SO I’M READING THIS COMIC AND I NEVER REALLY PUT TWO AND TWO TOGETHER BEFORE???

Obi-Wan is famously distrusting of politicians, which is a very reasonable thing to be in the galaxy they live in (since so many Senators are corrupt), and I’m sure many of them have seemed very kind and caring on the surface, but wind up only being charming to get at whatever agenda they’re carrying out. Obi-Wan has no idea if Padme will end up being the same.

Certainly, he has a bad feeling about the Chancellor (which Anakin doesn’t want to hear about, we see time and again that it falls on deaf ears when it comes to Anakin hearing anything bad about Palpatine) and then along comes another politician that Anakin has a strong positive feeling about….

And it never occurred to me that Obi-Wan would have been like, “I really don’t get a good feeling about Anakin’s friendship with the Chancellor and yet he won’t hear a word of it, IS THIS GOING TO BE ANOTHER RELATIONSHIP WITH A POLITICIAN JUST LIKE THAT ONE?”

Thankfully, Padme’s not a snake in the grass like Palpatine is, but Obi-Wan has no way of knowing that (and he did just get done being kind about pointing out that she was pleased to see them, to make Anakin feel better) and I’m sure it must have set off warning bells, especially if he has any kind of sense about the future and what it would ultimately bring to them.

THIS FASCINATED ME. Yoda goes from “No, you’re definitely not doing that.” to “Okay, sure, go ahead.” in like five seconds, and says that the Council has agreed already. Which means he went into that conversation already knowing they’d agreed to train Anakin, but still said no to Obi-Wan–and then I went back to reread the issue and, huh, yeah, Yoda’s having thoughts about Obi-Wan’s readiness all along the way.

That he was testing just how determined and ready Obi-Wan actually was, how much determination he had to go through with this, that if he’d cave at the first bit of real resistance, then he wasn’t ready, even though Obi-Wan himself had thought he was when Qui-Gon offered him to take his Trials.

It’s paralleled with Obi-Wan’s fight against Maul, where he says that he gave in to darkness, would have done anything to defeat Maul, but came back from it, reconnected with the Force and that is when he defeated Maul, when he defeated the sway the Dark Side had over him.

None of this is terribly new, of course, but it’s interesting to see Obi-Wan’s traits laid out like this, that he questions authority, that he can be forgetful sometimes, that he was too certain of things he shouldn’t be, but that he’s a natural leader and pilot, will become even better at these things, he has a strong connection with the Force, he’s loyal to a noble cause.

This is still a fairly young Obi-Wan Kenobi, but already we see the great and noble man he’s becoming, that the follies of youth are ones he learns his lessons from and becomes an even greater person, and THIS IS WHY I LOVE OBI-WAN KENOBI SO MUCH.

Because it’s not that he’s perfect, but rather that he works very hard to learn and grow and become better AND HE DOES.
