gffa | Hello again, dreamwidth!

This may turn out to be a good thing, now that I think about it.

I don't think that fandom will be heading back to dreamwidth in massive numbers, but I do really love the idea of having this as a backup in case something does happen and I want to know where to find people. And the good thing about this is that it will (hopefully!) force me to post here once in awhile, if I make the effort to remember to mirror meta here, so I have backups of that in case tumblr gets nuked.

That's my plan for this journal--the occasional personal post, checking my flist, and then basically an archive of stuff I especially don't want to lose. Feel free to comment here (threaded comments!!!!) or even filter me out if you're just here to keep tabs on me in case tumblr gets nuke or just lurk or what have you.

Hi! I have definitely missed threaded comments and the ability to have more casual conversations in them without feeling like I'm spamming my dash, so this will be nice!

I hope more people will mirror their posts here or feel comfortable just making more casual personal posts, because I think I'd feel more comfortable making light, non-serious comments than I would where tumblr feels like a constant struggle not to be spammy.

So I'm looking forward to exchanging more comments with you! ♥

Yeah, I’ve recently been looking back on lj stuff (to read fic and such) and the threaded comments were always nice to see. It provided better interactions than the systems on tumblr

I hope so too! I stopped doing proper posts on tumblr ages ago, so mostly I was just reblogging stuff and posting here. Yeah that’s so true, tumblr made it so easy to appear spammy which could get annoying.

I very, very much loved that tumblr was so easy to just jump right into and that it was a constant stream of new content, I've been spoiled in that regard.

But, at the same time, because it moved so fast, you couldn't really stop and have a conversation unless you wanted to take it to private messaging or else have incredibly huge reblog chains.

Having this conversation, right here, on tumblr would be a lot harder because you'd have to keep going back to that post buried on your dash or what have you, whereas it's much, much easier to just open it up and comment on DW! ♥

Oh exactly! It made having actual conversations like that so difficult, you could use replies, but not everyone had them. You could send asks, but tumblr could eat them. The messenger service is iffy at best.

Yeah! That’s why I didn’t comment much on stuff on tumblr, even when posts like yours were ripe for discussions!

Yes, exactly! Even if we tried to have this conversation on a post, it would just be all the replied in one long column (and in a tiny window, as well) and any other discussion would be mixed right in.

And, as much as I love the reblogs getting more attention to posts and getting more eyeballs on them, sometimes I didn't want to have a conversation because then it was up for everyone to comment on and there are a lot of assholes who really hate that I like the Jedi and so I couldn't really have conversations one-on-one, without everyone feeling like they could jump in and hound me.

Here, yes, anyone can comment and I very much welcome them!! But it's not constantly reblogging it to put it in everyone's faces, so there's more breathing room and I really, really have missed that!

And I wouldn't mind having discussions with people who come at me with good faith, but I've had so many people jumping into discussions to tell me things that canon explicitly says otherwise on because they made assumptions or fanon told them otherwise or context is for losers, that I just stopped engaging with a lot of people or even wound up outright blocking them.

I'm not here to change anyone's mind if they don't want it to be! But, at the same time, I'm not here to be anyone's yelling-into-the-void bag, either. Discussions are awesome! Yelling past each other is a HARD PASS.

So, like, if we have discussions where we disagree on some things, I may not be super chill, but I promise that I'm not trying to overwrite your feelings or opinions! And I think I can be laid back ENOUGH to have a civil discussion about it, one-on-one at least. ^_~

That’s good! I try and be nice too! I love reading your stuff because sometimes you end up covering bits of the new canon I haven’t read yet (I’ve got a backlog on the books and I pile of unread comics, I’ve failed at keeping up with most of the comic series)

New canon is really hard to keep up with some days, if you're more than a passive consumer of it. (Which is a totally fine way to be, I'm that way with a lot of other stuff! In some ways, it's a lot more fun, too.)

Even just today, I've only read one of the three comics that came out, I haven't watched the last few episodes of Resistance, I'm behind on LEGO Star Wars: All Stars, and I've got a bunch of books and comics I haven't watched, I haven't even finished ALL of the Galaxy of Adventures or even Forces of Destinies shorts.

I just want to talk about and yell about and gif them all?? TUMBLR TAKES UP A LOT OF MY TIME. XD

Yeah it really is! At the start I was like ‘right, blank slate! I can read everything!’ But there was just so many I failed pretty quick. The only long series I fully kept up with was Poe Dameron, otherwise I just read the short series (Han, Leia, Mace etc). I’m trying to read some more of the comics though and the new ones look pretty good!

I’ve got a book pile of doom next to me (if this was tumblr I’d add a pic of it heh), and a box of comics. A store here had some of the graphic novels for £5 so I got a few and want to reread some stuff before those issues. I’ve not watched all stars yet (alas cause it’s not here yet) and I’ve kept meaning to watch the forces of Destiny shorts. Resistance, I’m up to date on since it’s shown on Disney Xs saturdays so I watch that.

The last book I read was the first canto bight story (I need to finish the rest) and the last comic was the Star Wars graphic novel of the first issues. (Once Christmas is out the way I’ll order some more issues or try and get th graphic novels)

It's so easy to think that new canon hasn't been around that long, so it's easy to catch up with it all and then keep up with, which would then lead to free time to catch up on Legends stuff!

But they're putting out about 2-3 comics a week, they're putting out 2-3 novels a month (if you include the short stories), there's always some animated project airing on TV, and there are interviews with the cast and crew to read, etc. It starts adding up really, really quickly, especially if you want to take time to really absorb any of it or, you know, watch anything else ever!

How are you enjoying a lot of the stuff you're reading/watching? I admit, I wasn't a huge fan of the Canto Bight anthology, but I thought it worked better as an audiobook, where I could be charmed by the characters more. I'm currently listening to Empire's End (so that I can read the Poe comic, since apparently there's spoilers for the Aftermath trilogy in the Poe comic) and I'm going to miss it terrible and hope Chuck Wendig gets to write something else for Star Wars eventually!

Oh yeah, that’s what I thought at the start! I’ve stopped reading legends stuff as soon as the new canon shifted in, though I like how some references snuck in (especially ones to Death Troopers in the Rogue One guide since that was my fav of the old novels)

Oh yeah, there really are! I mean I don’t think it’s quite that many all the time but there’s been a lot of stuff lately (especially reference books, which I love and hope to get soon) hee yeah!

I usually preorder the novels but some (like the Thrawn ones) just sit there. There are ones that get read right away (like the Leia ones of certain POV last year) but yeah, I fail.

Ahh I loved Empires end and yeah some Poe comics do mention stuff from it as I recall. I do hope Chuck gets to write for it again! It sucks he lost that Vader one.

As for what I’m reading...

I read the first Canto Bight story in October (and then switched to another book... which isn’t Star Wars and which I’ve failed at reading sadly). I love anthology books, the first Star Wars books I recall reading was the old tales series. But anyway. I liked it, I just felt so bad for the little guy having such bad luck on his trip. I hope to read the others soon.

The first graphic novel (which covers 1-6 I believe) I read the other weekend because I went to comic con and read it on the trip. I’d read the first few issues before and there were some cool moments. Vader to Luke saying he’d killed many fathers, and the last scene that you’ve mentioned before with Vader cracking the window.

I got mutiny on mon Cala from the comic con so that’s ready to read though I think I’ll read the Vader comics I have (so I can read up to the Sho-Toruń war which seems relevant to new stuff).

I’m still loving Resistance. Kaz is so sweet. I do keep hoping Poe comes back for bb-8 soon though because it seems odd he’s left him for so long. I know it won’t stay light hearted for long though, because of Hosnian Prime :(

I do very much want to keep reading Legends stuff (especially since I'm so invested in the prequels characters) but it gets hard to find the time, especially when I also want to be reading fic!

I complain about how much time all of this sucks up, but I actually really do love being so thorough in commenting on each issue as I read it, I really feel satisfied afterwards, like it really had weight and impact, when I can give it that much attention!

How did you like the Canto Bight anthology? I had mixed feelings on it, but ultimately Kedpin and Anglang and Lexo really kind of won me over with being kinda charming in their own ways.

Resistance is just so utterly fun, I love how adorable it is! It feels like it's been ages since we had any thing fun--IIRC, the first season of Rebels was actually really pretty fun and silly, so I'm wondering if Resistance will go the same way? It's nice to have something fun for the meanwhile, though, and AHHH I WANT SO MANY CAMEOS. MORE POE! MORE LEIA! MORE PHAMSA! GIVE ME THEM ALL!

I had a few legends books that I’ve not yet read, and probably won’t now. Which is kinda sad but... a lot were new Jedi order ones and the whole vong thing was... so fatiguing because it got so depressing.

Yes I love the prequel characters! I’m so glad some of the novels next year deal with them (and the age of republic comics too). And yess I love reading fic too, I’ve been on an mcr reading binge back on lj so I feel you

I really love how much time you put into such things! Sometimes thinking about it does make new links that people would’ve otherwise missed

The Kedpin one is the only one I‘ve read so far, I need to read the rest sometime but I felt so sorry for him.

It really is! I love how fun it is so far even though I know things will get dark. I think it will go that way too, once a Kaz loses his home things will change. I do wish they was a little longer for the fun but, ah well. Yes! I want more cameos too! There have been some in the recent ones and the images for the one that’s next week for me has exactly what you want! All three of them in one epM

For me, I have trouble getting into Legends books, because it just so clearly didn't quite mesh with the canon, you know? Whether because George hadn't finished making his movies + TV shows or because they were just Bad At Star Wars or whatever, I keep trying a bunch of Legends books and they just keep sliding right off my brain in ways new canon doesn't do.

(Well, except for Wild Space. I will always love that book.)

Thankfully, even if Resistance gets dark, we'll still at least have the LEGO Star Wars series to be delightful! I'm so glad there's a new series now, because Freemakers hadn't been on in forever and I missed them!

Yeah exactly! The early ones especially were like that. It’s especially funny to read some of the reference books that have timelines of events, because there’s be this big question mark during the Clone Wars era, which obviously in universe marks absolutely no sense whatsoever. There’s only a few legends books I really liked and miss not being canon, Death Troopers, Red Harvest, Shadow Games.

Oh of course! The Lego stuff is always, without fail, hilarious! They manage to make it so funny. I heard the droidography book makes some of the stuff from them canon too which, wow
