Original posts here and here.

The intended goal is to provide a mirror for my meta and comic blogging posts (or at least the sufficiently meta-esque ones) and I'll use the tumblr image embeds, since that's easiest, but if tumblr gets nuked, I'll hopefully go back and find another place to upload them. Comic panels aren't so bad, but gifs might hit that 500mb limit on DW (or whatever it is).

I'm starting with some of my older meta, which tends to lean heavier on Legends stuff, because I really didn't understand the delineation between the two and I've grown far more invested in Canon as they've developed it. I'll mark which is which, but keep in mind that many of these posts are over a year old. They're probably still 99% in line with how I feel, but there might be some occasional evolutions of understanding in any follow-up discussions. (Still, feel free to engage with me about them, if you want! I heartily welcome that. ♥)

I LOVE THIS WHOLE ISSUE, but especially these moments because it’s so messy and complicated and doesn’t really have any answers by the end of the issue (the second half of the story is important, but this is already long enough), where Obi-Wan reaches out and offers the chance to talk, but Anakin turns away.

And I understand why, he’s angry that he’s not being put on a mission (Obi-Wan later changes his mind, but he’s still right that Anakin is volatile and he’s extremely distracted lately, as well as he’s clearly not telling anyone about why, he’s remaining closed off), he doesn’t really know how to talk about everything that’s bottled up inside him, he thinks Obi-Wan would never understand, and, as the issue takes care to point out: They never really chose each other.

The point isn’t that they don’t want each other, but instead that they do, they just never really made that clear to each other. Obi-Wan reaches out and offers the chance to talk, Anakin has a vision of Obi-Wan in danger and is freaking out about it, Anakin desperately craves Obi-Wan’s attention, he desperately wants to fix things, both because the war makes him destroy so many things and because he senses they’re off, Obi-Wan hesitates not because he doesn’t care, but because he cares so much about Anakin (as is said over and over and over, in so many various moments of Star Wars canon), it’s so important to do right by him, not because of a promise, not anymore, but because of Anakin himself, and he does go back and reconsider, makes an even stronger effort to show that he does trust and believe in Anakin, to tell Anakin that, yes, he does need him.

The point is that they’re a messy, complicated pair whose relationship is getting fucked over by the war and their own hesitation when it comes to the other, not because of lack of care, but because they want it so badly, but don’t really know how to fix it. It’s just… complicated and so much has happened and they have so little breathing space to fix any of it. AND THAT IS WHY I AM HERE, I LOVE THIS COMPLICATED, MESSY RELATIONSHIP.

— Star Wars: Republic - “Brothers in Arms” (continued from here)

This is the second half of what’s going on with Obi-Wan and Anakin in this issue–Anakin’s vision is coming true about Obi-Wan being in danger and so he FREAKS OUT and acts recklessly, so his rescue ends up with him needing to be rescued in turn, while Obi-Wan really does try to find a moment to talk about what he realized earlier, that they have chosen each other, but that they never made a point of it, but they’re interrupted and have to get back to the battle, but they’ll face it side by side.

THIS IS WHAT KILLS ME ABOUT OBI-WAN AND ANAKIN–they really do try to work through their miscommunication, Obi-Wan really does try to talk to Anakin, Anakin really does love him desperately, just as Obi-Wan loves him in return, neither of them love the other out of obligation or duty, but genuinely so, and they try to fix things, but there’s always something getting in the way, it’s always the war driving a wedge between them, always another duty to attend to that keeps them from having a moment to themselves, always just “one more thing” to take care of before they can properly talk.

And it kills me how badly Anakin can’t deal with how complicated things are, he really is trying to be good and to do the right thing and figure this shit out, but he just doesn’t have any idea how to do it, it’s such a clear bit of foreshadowing for how he falls, because he tries to handle this shit, tries to be emotionally and mentally responsible for the shit in his life, and he can’t do it.

It kills me because Anakin says he’ll try to do better and Obi-Wan’s immediate response is that he knows Anakin will, he knows Anakin is trying, he tells Anakin that he needs him in this battle, he offers the chance to talk, he tries to figure out what their relationship needs. It kills me because Obi-Wan doesn’t put the blame on Anakin for their distance, but instead offers a very genuine “You have my trust, Anakin. And if you need to talk….”

There is so much deep care here and so much effort on both sides and yet I can still see why it all goes wrong and IT BREAKS MY HEART BUT ALSO IT IS SO DELICIOUS.
