(It's hard to motivate myself to post the meta here when it's so designed for tumblr + I don't think tumblr's going anywhere. I do want to! I will get back to it! Just let me establish some personal stuff on this journal for awhile.)

ღ - Podcast rec of the week: Cocaine and Rhinestones is absolutely fascinating to listen to, despite that I'm not really at all a fan of country music. You can tell the host really spent a lot of time with these stories and really did his best to find the truth as much as he could and understand what was really going on, but mostly it's just an excellent look at these people who are amazing and did amazing things, sometimes that are way, way over the line. Even if country music isn't your thing, I would suggest a listen (but give him a little time to really get into the groove of the show and be very wary of the Spade Cooley episode, that was a hard listen), it's totally engrossing. I especially enjoyed the episode about Loretta Lynn's The Pill and Bobbie Gentry's Ode to Billie Joe.

ღ - Speaking of podcasts, I get such schadenfreude every time someone drags Sword & Scale and its host. I can't stop listening--the production values are too polished that it's just too easy to listen to--but I can't say I've been willing to recommend it for a long time, just because I really disliked the way the host treated various mental illnesses and the way it overdramatizes everything, until it's basically a highly polished A Very Special Episode podcast. So, when I see others have the same feelings, ahhhh, I'm not alone!

ღ - I don't know if I'll get a full recs set for The Terror, because honestly The Devils Before Us by MasterOfAllImagination is absolutely everything I needed from fandom. Crozier/Fitzjames "return to England and begin the long journey home" and it's perfect, the subtle buildup and the work to try to reintegrate into London society and how well that goes/doesn't go sometimes, how they're not the people they started out as, how the fic really nails their characters and their relationship, especially Crozier's character (since its his pov). It's just really lovely and really satisfying, what else could I ask for than a fic that does the rest of the heavy lifting for their relationship?

ღ - I saw some Dick/Babs kissing on the latest episodes of Young Justice, which makes me tempted to catch up, but I haven't read/watched anything DC in years and I'm not sure the magic would still be there for me, but it does my heart good to know my OTP of OTPs is getting kissing scenes!

ღ - Please wish me luck in getting through this pile of fic recs I am attempting!

I originally wanted to have this just for a meta backup, but personal posts have been a lot more fun (well, as personal as talking about fannish stuff is, instead of IRL stuff, anyway) and a lot of what I miss is casual chatting with friends about laid back stuff, so, casual posts it is!

Good luck with getting through your tabs! How many do you have open? (Last night I had to finally force myself to go through the ~250 fic tabs I had open and save the ones I wanted to my reader, because that was getting ridiculous. orz)

It's tempting to dump all the meta at once (how I miss the draft + scheduling options!) just to have it archived, but I'm enjoying the slower pace, too. So, eh, if tumblr folds, I have the meta saved already and can do it then, otherwise, this pace is fine.

In some ways, I kind of love having a bunch of tabs open--all that potential of stuff to read! I could even go link hopping in those tabs!--but also it gets to be intimidating after awhile, so every few months I have to go and clear it all out. I'm cheering your progress on, too!

I agree! Right now I have so many filled with all the things. I have read a few over the recent weeks but not too many (and I’ve even opened a few more oops)

One thing I really missed about LJ/DW from before the move to tumblr is that sense of slower paced casual conversations, because that's where you really get to know people and make friends. It felt so much harder on tumblr (for all that I loved it for other reasons), so hopefully wherever we go next will have that ability, as well as DW is still here and I'm enjoying it lots!

Do you read on-line or do you save for reading later? I put everything I want to read on a reader (I get too distracted while on-line), so I can just clear everything out in one swoop. But trying to read a 50k fic in just one tab, when I have 20 more open? Overwhelming!

Yeah same here! As good as tumblr is for making pic posts easily, it made actual holding conversations difficult. (And in fact such interaction was often discouraged to begin with at least.) interacting here is awesome cause we can just ramble at each other easily!

I read online. As a student doing stuff through the open uni (so at home online) I’m mostly at home so I’m online a lot so I just read on ao3 or wherever. I feel that though, especially when it comes out choosing soemthing

I used to read on-line, but I don't do it anymore, I'm always wanting to check my e-mail or check to see if something new has been posted or, worst of all, refresh my tumblr dash.

I have to get away from it totally if I want any success at reading! I could probably retrain myself, but it's sooooo hard, when there are so many distractions! Hence why a handheld reader is one of the best investments just about ever, in my opinion. XD

I'm enjoying this season of YJ - the entire show is excellent - but the Dick/Babs stuff is sort of around the periphery - it's not a main plot (which is nice; they seem like a pretty stable couple atm, and she is also Oracle, which I prefer).

Oh, that's very good to hear! As much as I would enjoy a whole story about them, sometimes it's nice just to have something be part of the background and given cute moments here and there.

I like Batgirl!Babs a lot (I cut my teeth on Batman: The Animated Series when I was younger, that was my entryway into the comics, so I'll always be fond of that version of her), but I prefer Oracle!Babs as well, she really felt like she settled.

It's so hard to motivate yourself! Though, I have found that momentum is often really helpful--if you know that just starting something will make it easier to get going, you don't have to think about the whole big thing, just think about the beginning, "you can do that much" I tell myself, then that does get easier. Of course, then I also take a four hour nap or whatever in reward. orz

Taking the pressure off yourself can help, if pressure is something that paralyzes you--even if you don't get any momentum going and just do that first little bit, it's still a little bit more than you had done before, and that can be enough.

Being mindful and staying in the present, yes! It's actually good advice, WHO WOULD HAVE GUESSED???? XD

You mentioning the podcasts you've enjoyed reminded me that I recently listened to one that I think you'd really like, if you haven't tried it out yet. Dan Carlin's Hardcore History, Blueprint for Armageddon I is a long listen, just over 3 hours, but it's really really good. He talks through the road to war leading up to World War I in a somewhat rambling, but totally engrossing historical story format. In the second half in particular, he delves into some fascinating insights about how propaganda was utilized in that era, how it shaped so many important attitudes and decisions, and I couldn't help thinking of some Star Wars parallels that I'm sure you would be really into.

Recs have been accomplished! And I hope there'll be at least a couple in there that you'll enjoy that you haven't seen before! (I sometimes feel vaguely bad about going down shipping rabbit holes, but I figure, if nothing else, I WILL find every pro-Jedi genfic in this fandom and shove it at everyone who will listen for more than five minutes at a time. ^_~)

You had me at Star Wars parallels + propaganda studying! As much as I like to learn things just to learn them, one way to shoot something to the top of my to-listen list is definitely to tell me it'll give some cool potential insight into Star Wars. THANK YOU FOR THE REC, I LOVE PODCAST RECS. ♥
